The article deals with the problems of the organization of the State Museum of Palekh Art in the village of Palekh, Ivanovo region. The importance of this museum as the most significant and valuable storehouse of Palekh icon painting and lacquer miniature in the country is revealed. The purpose of the article is to give a detailed description of the initial stage of the activity of the State Museum of Palekh Art (1930s — first half of the 1940s) as a key element in the formation of the museum. The author reveals the merits of the museum workers in the creation and development of the original exposition during the 1930–1940s, as well as changes in it that occurred during the Great Patriotic War. The article also reveals the ideological and propaganda aspect of the organization of the Palekh Museum, as well as its daily life during the Great Patriotic War, which has not yet received adequate coverage in scientific literature. The author comes to conclusions that in the 1930–1940s the museum workers of Palekh sought, despite the difficulties of this period, to collect and promote both pre-revolutionary Palekh icon painting and the new art of Palekh lacquer miniatures.
