The article is devoted to the history of the network of school museums in the Irkutsk region. In chronological order the foundation of museums, their history, traditions, creation of expositions and features of activity at the present stage, including innovative approaches and information technologies are considered. Since the activity of school museums is not adequately covered in the sources, this work is intended to fill some gaps in this problem and briefly summarize available information. School museums arose as a result of many years of work with schoolchildren in academic subjects, as a result of the overall work of student groups. In the Irkutsk region, the first school museums appear in the 40s of the 20th century due to the wide spread of region studies. Throughout the 20th century, school regional studies experienced ups and downs, historical realities also reflected not only on activities, but also on the very fact of the existence of school museums. The traditional school museum is a rural museum, often with unique exhibits and, as a rule, founded by a team of teachers and students of the school. Over time, such a museum receives public recognition, in some cases, the collection grows into the formation of a municipal institution. Thus, the funds of some school museums served as the basis for the creation of local history museums that exist to the present day. In this paper, the number of existing school museums is given, the data on the dynamics of their appearance in different years, allows us to get a fairly accurate picture of the development of school museums in the region in the context of the overall development of the museum business in the Irkutsk region.
